The David Guidi Quartet

David Guidi Quartet

“The music is introspective and thoughtful, yet by turns burningly hot when it needs to be.”  - Cadence Magazine

“Trane himself would be proud of Guidi's penetrating solos.”  - jazzchicago.net

David and his quartet have performed across the country from California to Texas and Florida to New York. The group is comprised of musicians with explosive talent whose performances combine original compositions with arrangements of jazz standards.

Beachside is David's first recording as a leader and showcases his original small-ensemble compositions. The musicians include Leon Anderson on drums, Kevin Bales on piano and Rodney Jordan on bass.

“When my high school jazz band recently hosted the David Guidi Quartet for three days to provide clinics, lessons and performances, I was amazed to see a group of guys teach with such tremendous passion and play with so much fire. This quartet crafts a great deal of nuance and style when they play. It was a pleasure to work with a group that creates serious jazz music while providing an accessible learning environment for my students. I hope to have you guys back, soon!!!”  - Tim Mikan, Palm Desert High School Jazz Ensemble I

Quartet Bios

The quartet includes David Potter on drums, Will Goble on bass and Austin Johnson on piano. Each of these musicians has studied their instruments with jazz masters and currently works under the tutelage of jazz-great Marcus Roberts. This group has performed extensively together and is available for clinics at high schools and universities.

Will Goble is an in-demand bassist performing across the southeastern United States. He has appeared with Grammy award-winner Marcus Roberts and as a sideman with numerous other notable artists, including Vincent Gardner, Leon Anderson, Kevin Bales, Scotty Barnhart, Barry Green, Philip Harper, Jason Marsalis, Takana Miyamoto, and Stephen Riley among others. Will is currently on staff as a graduate teaching assistant in the jazz studies program at Florida State University where he is assisting Marcus Roberts in developing educational curricula for new college students interested in studying jazz.

Austin Johnson, Piano

Austin Johnson currently resides in Tallahassee, Florida where he is on scholarship at the Florida State University studying with Marcus Roberts and Bill Peterson. Prior to arriving to Tallahassee, he began performing professionally throughout North Carolina as a freelance musician with various local artists and was featured in the Steve Hobbs Quartet. During his time in North Carolina, he was influenced by his many opportunities to study and perform with musicians such as Carl Allen, Lenora Helm, Branford Marsalis, Todd Williams, Winard Harper, Terrell Stafford, Ed Thigpen, Robert Trowers, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Fred Wesley, and Ira Wiggins.

Having been featured in the piano trios of Ellis Marsalis and Marcus Roberts, David Potter is quickly becoming known as a formidable musician. He has performed with many other well-known jazz artists around the country including Wycliffe Gordon, Marcus Printup, Martin Bejerano, Greg Gisbert, and Greg Tardy. David has also recorded the soundtrack to a short film with bassist Delbert Felix. His accomplishments have led to many prestigious opportunities, including being chosen from a national pool of applicants in 2005 to be a member of the Louis Armstrong Quintet at the University of New Orleans. Unfortunately, the tragedy of hurricane Katrina temporarily ended his hopes for a career in Louisiana. In the spring of 2006, he began to re-audition for graduate schools and was awarded a full scholarship to the prestigious Juilliard Jazz Program in New York City. After several days of intense meditation, he declined the offer and recently returned to Florida State University to work and collaborate with his mentor Marcus Roberts.
